Our History

The history of Old Center Elementary represents a tradition of excellence in the Goodlettsville and Madison communities. Located in northern Davidson County, the school was established in 1815 as a one-room, log schoolhouse on Old Campbell Road just off Dickerson Road. The name, Old Center, was derived from the center point of four large farms that met at the cornered center. The school, constructed at that center, was completed in 1876. Prior to 1900, that building was replaced with a white frame building. In 1904, there were two rooms and two teachers for students in first through tenth grades.

In 1936, the Worker Progress Administration completed a brick building at the present location. Other additions to the school were made in 1961 and in 1968. During the 2004-2005 school year, the students and staff relocated to the old Brick Church Middle School while a $3,508,945.00 renovation and addition project was taking place on the existing building. The project was completed in August of 2005 and students and staff returned to the Old Center campus on Dickerson Road to begin the current school year. Old Center still retains the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating public school in Davidson County. The school also holds the distinction of being the first public school in the county to provide transportation (horse and wagon) for students and the first public school to provide hot lunches.
